In our monthly Meet the Team series we celebrate the great people who keep our business ticking, learning more about their role, career journey, and what drives them everyday.
This week we chatted with Associate Partner Anthony Haydock, who works in our lease advisory team. Anthony joined us in May last year having previously spent over seven years at BNP Paribas Real Estate in its occupier solutions team dealing with clients such as Accenture, Centrica and EDF Energy.
As part of our team, Anthony provides specialist advice in lease renewals, rent reviews and lease regears for clients including Tesco, Central England Cooperative and Birmingham City Council.
We sat down with Anthony to find out a little bit more about his property career to date and some of the influential figures who have guided him over the years.
What initially drew you to start a career in property?
The fact that property is something tangible and lasting but also highly dynamic – every client, property, and transaction presents a different challenge so no day is the same.
What does a typical working day look like for you?
A typical working day for me starts with a coffee, then checking emails and picking up where I left off with negotiating lease events by either working out floor areas, looking for evidence, or negotiating with another agent. And, if I have time on the odd occasion I will squeeze in a lunchtime pint.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The variety! As mentioned, no job or transaction is the same. Each of them comes with their own difficulties and challenges and it is my job to achieve the best possible result for my clients.
Who has been the most influential mentor or figure in your career?
I’ve been lucky enough to have had two influential figures throughout my career – Elaine Murphy and Paul Milsom. I started my career working with Elaine and she greatly helped me settle in and develop my knowledge, as well as build my confidence within the industry. She was also a massive help throughout the whole APC process and was highly influential in me passing. Paul helped and guided me through the transition to Lease Advisory remaining consistently available, patient and supportive, and I look forward to our continued collaboration.
If you could go back and give your younger self one piece of career advice, what would it be?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions and don’t be afraid to make mistakes as you learn more from mistakes.
What’s been your proudest achievement, professional or otherwise?
My proudest professional achievement was becoming chartered as I had put a lot of work in to get to that point, so to then pass felt like a big relief.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
I would like to say I spend my time going to the gym and keeping fit but that seems to have taken a back seat lately, especially over the festive period, which for me apparently lasted three months, but I am hoping to get back to it. Otherwise, I like to watch football, especially the Villa, socialise with friends and learn more about history, either by visiting historic places or by listening to podcasts or watching documentaries.
