Our Meet the Team series is all about shining a spotlight on the people who make our business what it is. Each month, we’ll be chatting with different members of the team to learn more about their roles, career journeys and what motivates them everyday.
This week we chatted with partner Ian Starbuck, who works in our property management team. Ian has been in the commercial property market for over 25 years and has specialised in property management for the past 17 years. He acts for a range of clients including national retailers, property companies, charities and private investors, overseeing a variety of properties across the UK, including shopping business centres, retail parades, office buildings and industrial estates.
We sat down with Ian to ask his thoughts on the changing property market, why he loves working in the Midlands and what continues to inspire him after more than two decades in the industry.
What do you enjoy most about working in property?
The variety of the work. Rarely are two days the same, especially within Property Management. It’s also a very sociable profession, whether that’s meeting tenants, clients, or other surveyors within the property community.
What does your role entail?
I am an Equity Partner within the Property Management department and Head of Finance at Johnson Fellows.
What does a typical working day look like? Is there such a thing?
I don’t think there is! I could be heading almost anywhere in the UK for a property inspection, client or tenant meeting. If I am in the office, I could be preparing service charge budgets, chasing rent arrears, dealing with the flow of emails, or meeting with my fellow Partners to discuss the running of the business.
What makes the Midlands a great place to do business?
The people. Considering Birmingham is the second city, the property community is surprisingly close knit.
How do you see the property market evolving in the next five years?
I hope that we will see the market stabilise, recover and then grow over the next few years with improved investor confidence. Sustainability will continue to be a core driver with ever stricter standards. Technology, particularly AI, will play a greater role and if used correctly will enhance efficiency.
What’s a key lesson you’ve learned in your career that still guides you today?
Treat other people how you would like to be treated yourself and give people your time and attention when approached for advice.
What’s been your proudest achievement, professional or otherwise?
Professionally, becoming an Equity Partner at Johnson Fellows. Personally, raising my son Harry, with my wife Steph.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
I have an interest in most sports, but especially football and Formula 1. I watch Aston Villa when I can, although not as frequently as I used to. I attend a Grand Prix with friends at least once a year and I also enjoy classic cars. Outside of my own interests, I look forward to family holidays and exploring new destinations with my wife and son.
